Victor Claver: "We are preparing, but we don’t know what for"
The Euroleague officially confirms the cancellation of the 2019-20 season
At the time of the interruption of the tournament, FC Barcelona was leading with a victory over Real Madrid and two over the surprising Casademont Zaragoza.
A few hours ago the club announced the first medical report of Gerard Piqué’s injury suffered yesterday during the game against Atlético de Madrid. The Barça center-back has “a grade 3 sprain in the internal lateral ligament with partial injury to the cruciate ligament".

The cruciate ligament (so called because it forms a cross with the posterior) anterior (ACL) “prevents the anterior translation of the tibia with respect to the femur and contributes to resistance to internal and external rotation of the knee while it is extended,” they say. the knee specialists from iMove-Clínica Mi Tres Torres, doctors Aguilar, Clemente and Leal.
For its part, the medial collateral ligament (MCL) is located in the inner part of the knee at the extra-articular level and as stated by the traumatologists of iMove-Clínica Mi Tres Torres, “its fundamental function is to resist the 1 bet tension in valgus at 30 degrees of knee flexion. It also helps to limit the anterior and posterior translation, as well as the rotation, of the tibia ”. Therefore, Drs. Leal, Clemente, and Aguilar state that when both ligaments are torn, “the knee can become exponentially more unstable in various planes of function than in isolated ligament injuries.”
Traumatologists at the iMove Knee Unit say that combined ACL and MCL injuries commonly occur as a result of contact mechanisms between athletes. “It is common for the player to feel or hear a burst or a tearing sensation and associate immediate pain over the MCL along the inside of the knee.” Inflammation, pain, and difficulty supporting weight bearing during ambulation often accompany the injury early.
Regarding the treatment of the combined injury, the doctors of the Knee Unit of iMove-Clínica Mi Tres Torres affirm that it is “controversial regarding what would be recommended in an isolated ACL or MCL injury. A wide variety of treatment approaches have been described for combined injuries. Although the majority recommend ACL reconstruction (especially in the case of complete injury) and non-surgical treatment of the MCL as standard for combined ACL injuries when the MCL is grade I or II, there is controversy about the optimal method to treat a combined ACL and MCL grade III injury ”.
Therefore, the specialist must personalize the treatment recommendations according to the temporality of the injury, the degree of the injury and the objectives and expectations of specific results for each patient. The different treatment options and the complexity and uncertainty that these injuries entail mean that the prediction of times in the recovery phase oscillates in a highly variable range of months. “In the case of the injury suffered by Gerard Piqué, we could be talking about between 3 and more than 6 months of time for reincorporation to the pitch”, affirm doctors Clemente, Leal and Aguilar.
“Being away for months from the pitch can completely change the careers of athletes. Many of the professionals who suffer this type of major knee injury run the risk of not regaining their confidence or football level if the post-treatment evolution is not satisfactory ”.
